The Arabic on the second shot says; “The relatives of the dead should go through the clothes before leaving the room”. Thank you for the post.

Mona — Thanks. I don’t read Arabic but the photo moved me as one that seemed to have an allegorical quality to it. Your translation simply confirms the point.

Lucaites – I support your work very much. Any Arabic from now on – just e-mail me! The shot is amazing though – all the details for preparing the bodies for burial are there – then the grief. Again, thank you.

Heartbreaking images. But 85,000 is a huge underestimate. Not everyone accepts the methodologically-sound Lancet/Johns Hopkins study that put excess Iraqi deaths due to the invasion at more than a million, but virtually everyone not paid by the US or UK governments admits that the death toll is in the hundreds of thousands. Iraq Body Count merely adds up deaths reported through more-or-less official channels, which results in a massive undercount.

Michael: I don’t disagree. I was being conservative under the assumption that even here the magnitude of difference is hard to imagine … But thanks for writing and putting out the issue.
